Support for Turnaround/Shut-down Projects

print this page

Every organization aspires for and works diligently towards an injury-free plant shut-down project. LEHDER can help by providing Industrial Hygiene guidance and hands-on field support for plant safety, operations and contractor personnel prior to and during turnaround projects.

One of our greatest strengths is the LEHDER team’s ability to interact with and actively work as a liaison amongst diverse groups while promoting and supporting a safe work environment.

LEHDER Capabilities
LEHDER can offset the additional workload which occurs during turnaround projects for on-site company Industrial/Occupational Hygiene personnel by providing coverage on a 24 hour / 7 days a week basis during the length of the shut-down.

The LEHDER team of skilled professionals includes Project Leaders and Managers, Certified Industrial Hygienist/Registered Occupational Hygienist, Engineering Technologists and Field Technicians.

The types of services provided by LEHDER include noise monitoring, indoor air quality monitoring, chemical air contaminant monitoring and thermal stress evaluations.

Our Field Technicians are trained in the use of a variety of exposure assessment equipment including but not limited to: MultiRAE, AreaRAE, Draegar & Gastec pumps, UltraRAE, TSI Dustrak, and BK Sound Level Meters.

Benefits of using LEHDER
Our experience has been that the LEHDER presence on-site promotes safe behaviours, allows for open communication pathways and encourages proactive anticipation of hazards – thereby sending a clear message to workers that their health and well-being is critical to a successful turnaround project.

Experience Level
Each LEHDER team member has years of experience in chemical and petroleum refining and manufacturing industries. More specifically, each LEHDER team member has hands-on experience in turnaround situations which results in a vital mix of skill and understanding of shut-downs that cannot easily be taught but must be “lived”.

Recent Turnaround Projects
In both 2006 and 2007, LEHDER has provided a Sarnia-Lambton refinery with 24 hour / 7 days a week Industrial Hygiene support during 60-90 day shutdown/turnaround projects. In addition, LEHDER has assisted with pre-shutdown worker exposure assessments during the cleaning and clearing preparatory phase prior to contractors arriving on-site.

LEHDER has also been called upon by Sarnia-Lambton refineries and chemical plants to provide project specific Industrial Hygiene support during shut-down situations. An example would be carrying out silica exposure assessments on workers during refractory removal within furnaces.

Goals of Industrial Hygiene
Industrial Hygiene (also known as Occupational Hygiene) is the science of anticipating, recognizing, evaluating and controlling workplace conditions that may cause worker’s injury or illness.

The goals of Industrial Hygiene are:

  • To protect the health and well-being of workers
  • To maintain an objective view and be prepared to render professional judgment
  • To counsel workers regarding the hazards and precautions necessary to avoid adverse health risks
  • To prevent occupational injury and illness
