Local
Training Efforts
Since 1990 LEHDER has been providing teaching services
to Fanshawe College located in London, Ontario.
This effort involves the teaching of both the theory
and laboratory sections described in the credit
course ENVR-605 which is part of Fanshawe's 3-year
Environmental Technologist program.
LEHDER has also conducted stack sampling training
programs at Lambton College located in Sarnia,
Ontario at the request of the Centre for Applied
Process Technology (CAPT).
International Training
Efforts
In 2004 LEHDER Environmental Services conducted
an extensive stack sampling training program for
a group of six environmental professionals from
India. The program involved providing "hands-on"
training in stack sampling at a chemical industrial
site in the Sarnia area.
Terra International offered its site in Courtright,
Ontario for the training program which occurred
in June 2004. The training involved instruction
in reference methods for the determination of
particulate concentrations and mass rates from
process exhaust stacks. Mr. Mike Denomme, Principal
of LEHDER said "LEHDER has conducted several
similar training programs in the past for local
colleges and industry; however, this was our first
experience in the international forum. It was
truly a rewarding experience for all involved.
We are very thankful to the Terra plant for allowing
us to provide the training at their facility;
it was an ideal location and well organized by
Terra personnel".
During each portion of the training program LEHDER
was committed to providing a safe, effective and
highly educational training experience. To achieve
this, each trainee was required to complete all
necessary safety training and/or certification
prior to participation in any field work. This
included a one hour basic training course at the
Sarnia Lambton Industrial Educational Co-operative
for which proof of WHMIS training is a prerequisite.
Mr. Denomme said "throughout the field training
program we emphasized that safety can only be
the highest priority. This includes the proper
use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and
the ability to identify potential risks associated
with each task prior to carrying out the job.
Based on our training, we believe that they will
return to India with a new appreciation and awareness
for working safe."
In addition, the Indian professionals were very
impressed and interested in the role played by
the Sarnia Lambton Environmental Association (SLEA).
Mr. Scott Munro, General Manager of SLEA made
a presentation to the visitors during their stay
and made arrangements for visits to the SLEA water
monitoring and mobile air monitoring stations.
The field training conducted in the Sarnia area
involved a team of at least three skilled and
qualified LEHDER environmental specialists. Of
the three, one was stationed on the stack platform
(assembly and operation of sample box), one was
at ground level (control unit operator), and one
was located in the LEHDER recovery trailer. Each
of the six trainees were stationed with a LEHDER
trainer at each of the three sites. Following
each test run, the trainees were rotated to a
different duty for subsequent test runs, this
ensured that each trainee was given the opportunity
to become familiar with all aspects of the field
work.
Although only in Sarnia-Lambton for one week,
the Indian visitors were impressed with the warm
hospitality and the clean environment and expressed
a strong desire to return to the area in the future.

The follow-up phase of the training program was
conducted in March 2005 at the CPCB offices in
Delhi, India. This involved a review of the training
that was provided at LEHDER in June 2004 and an
assessment of the sampling equipment and procedures
used during a stack sampling experiment at a local
coal fired power plant in Delhi.
